Forensic psychology has mushroomed into a diverse expert witness and law and increasingly complex field that is equal parts law expert witness and law and psychology. Psychologists act as expert witnesses in legal cases - sometimes without knowing much about the laws involved, expert witness and law and legal professionals rely on the assessment of psychologists sometimes without knowing much about how such assessments are made. The purpose of this handbook is to provide professionals with current, practical, expert witness and law and empirically based information to guide their work in forensic settings, or to better their understanding of the issues expert witness and law and debates in forensic psychology. Divided into four sections, the Handbook of Forensic Psychology covers basic issues, assessment, mental disorders expert witness and law and forensic psychology, expert witness and law and special topics. The basic issue chapters present a primer on law for the psychologist, a primer on psychology for attorneys, an overview of ethical issues relevant to forensic psychology, expert witness and law and a chapter on forensic report writing. The assessment section discusses factors expert witness and law and measures relevant for assessing a variety of behaviors, propensities, expert witness and law and capabilities, including dangerousness, violence, suicide, competency, substance abuse, PTSD expert witness and law and neuropsychological evaluations, as well as discussing interviewing children expert witness and law and child custody evaluations. Expert witness - An expert witness is a witness, who by virtue of education, or profession, or experience, is believed to have special knowledge of his subject beyond that of the average person, sufficient that others may officially (and legally) rely upon his opinion.

Hostile witness - In United States law, a hostile witness is a witness in a trial who testifies for the opposing party or a witness who offers adverse testimony to the calling party during direct examination. A witness called by the opposing party is presumed hostile.

Material witness - A material witness is a witness who possesses relevant and important information in a criminal investigation or trial. Under United States law, material witnesses—which may be victims or eyewitnesses—can not be detained unless the judge believes the person in question will flee to avoid participating in the investigation.

Witness impeachment - Witness impeachment, in the law of evidence, is the process of calling into question the credibility of an individual who is testifying in a trial. There are a number of ways that a witness may properly be impeached, and several ways that, although effective, are prohibited except under special circumstances.
